 A Personal Tip From Me Regarding Solar Lights.

On one occasion about two years ago, we purchased a set of 10 Solar Lights.  Very happy with our new Garden Lights, we spent a couple of hours setting them up at perfect spacings around our circular drive.

The next morning we come out, and every one of our brand new Solar Lights were gone, the thieves being able to just walk up, pull the lights out and do a runner.  We actually had those lights for less than 24 hours.

Off we went and bought 10 more lights, but said “this aint going to happen again”

We purchased 40 feet (12 metres) of 1/4” (approx. 5mm) Stainless Steel wire, this could have also been plastic coated steel wire.

Just above the spikes on the Solar Lights, I drilled a 3/8” hole (8mm) through the actual pole of the lights.

A very thin trench was then scrapped out around the garden to the depth that the Solar Lights were going to sit, we then threaded the 10 lights onto the wire, and pushed the lights into the ground in the position we wanted them.

When I bought the Stainless Steel wire, I also purchased 8 metal tent pegs, these were hammered into the ground at intervals with the hook over the wire.

The trench was then filled in, nobody knew the wire was there, and the lights were locked into place.

Someone has tried to remove one of the end lights, but we found it laying on the ground still hooked to the wire, and to this day we still have our 10 Solar Lights, and the thieves have nothing.

The Pros and Cons of Solar Lights.

Most of the modern Solar Lights do use LED’s instead of bulbs, some manufacturers will guarantee them for 10 years.  They cost nothing to install or run and the suns power is limitless, but Solar Lights do have their limitations. In my opinion they are not really designed for illuminating big areas, where lots of people may congregate.

Pros of Solar Lights.

• They last a lot longer, LED’s dont break or shatter.
• Very low maintainence, LED’s can last to 10 years, no messing around replacing bulbs that burn out.
• Solar Lights with LED’s dont just stop working, they gradually loose their illumination over time.
• You are reducing your CARBON FOOTPRINT, every solar light counts towards energy saving.
• The way LED’s are manufactured, will comply with strict regulations on the enviroment in the future.
• Unless you have a Solar Panel placed somewhere, there is no need for any underground wiring.



Cons of Solar Lights.

• If the Solar Lights or Panels are shaded from bushes or trees, this can have an affect on the charging.
• LED’s dont light up a big area, mainly only used along paths and as a feature in decks etc.
• The panels in the Solar Lights are usually small, and dont catch a massive dose of the sun.
• Solar Panels do get covered in dust, and do need to be cleaned quite a bit.
• You must buy GOOD QUALITY rechargeable batteries for a longer life.
• No control over Solar Lights that are supposed to come on and off automatically.

 

My personal opinion is that Solar Lights are the way to go.  Yes they are not the perfect idea for lighting massive areas, but I do believe that all that will change in the future with all the research that is being done on Solar Power.

At the present time, they are what they are.  People buy them for illuminating  a path to improve safety, some people install them to feature a special plant or shrub at night, some people just want a feature around their deck.

I say GO SOLAR and lets try and reduce our energy use, every Milli Watt SAVED, is lots of Watts SAVED.
