The wind chime, usually made of hollow materials are also known as Aeolian Chimes.  As I have written above chimes are manufactured of all different types of materials in all shapes and sizes.  The tubes are different lengths and when they strike each other in the breeze they give out the different tones.  The wind chime is considered lucky because the sound they produce fills the area with joy and contentment.

The wind chime is reputed to be the international symbol of peace, happiness and harmony, and connected to the feng shui approach of being compatible with your fellow man.  Wind chime tones are designed around the material, length and diameter, with some chimes sounding like church bells to the fine sounds of glass chimes.  Some people who live in areas of high noise and traffic believe a wind chime or series of chimes with different tones will block out all the unwanted sounds you don’t want to hear.

Some helpful information from the manufacturers of Wind Chimes.

When hanging your Wind Chime, spare a thought for your new musical friend.  Instead a banging a nail in anywhere to hang your chimes, think about something like a screw in eye hook or a carabiner.  By doing this, as well as the look of a professional job, you will stop the cord form rubbing on a nail, during harsh weather, which will eventually cause the cord to break, sending your Chimes crashing to the ground.

To test your Chime hanging method, the experts say you should apply a force of between two and three times the weight of the Wind Chime.

If you are hanging your chimes from a wall, make sure you use a proper 90 degree wall bracket, preferably with a cross support (gusset), fix to a timber wall with screws or a brick or masonry wall with plastic plugs or dyna bolts.  The most important thing to think about when you are purchasing your bracket is to get one that is big enough to keep the Wind Chime away from the wall, as the last thing you want is to have your new chimes hitting and scraping on the wall in strong winds.

An interesting article on the History of Wind Chimes by Gnana Ramanathan.

The wind chime is becoming more and more popular these days, not only in Asian countries but also in Western countries including here in the US. The main reason for this is the growing popularity of Feng Shui. We all know that the wind chime produces melodious music which is relaxing for our mind. A study of the history of the wind chime would show that the music was not the only reason why people hung wind chimes in their homes centuries earlier.

Historians believe that people used a wind chime for other reasons also. The most important one of course, was it was believed in Asian countries that the sound of chimes wards away bad spirits from our homes and invites good spirits. They are believed to bring us good health and good luck. Feng Shui which literally translates to wind-water, recommends using a wind chime to balance the energies produced by the various forces. It attracts good energy and wards off bad energy.

But superstitions and beliefs aside, our ancestors used the wind chime for another very practical reason, namely, weather forecasting. As we all know, in ancient times, there were no sophisticated equipments to predict wind patterns, storms etc. So, it is believed that people hung these wind chimes in places where wind can pass through. By noticing a small change in the melody produced by the wind chime, they were able to predict which direction the wind was blowing from and the intensity with which it was blowing. Stronger winds and hence more chimes, indicated that a storm was brewing. This was particularly useful for fishermen and people living along coastal region as it warned them to not go to the sea and maybe saved their lives. Our ancestors were so intelligent as to use a simple chime producing instrument as a weather predicting tool!

As you can see, wind chimes have been used for various reasons. Nowadays stores even use wind chimes to inform them when a customer enters! Whatever the reason, even if one is not superstitious, the wind chime can always be hung in a home just as a decorative piece and for the melodious music that it produces.
