Did you know that the word Chandelier appeared in the English language as far back as the 14th Century.  This was derived from the 10th Century French word Candelabre, which was originally from the Latin word Candela, which means candle.

In the earliest form during medieval days, the Chandelier was basically a wooden cross, with spikes which the candles were attached, these crosses were then hoisted by rope to a suitable height.  During the 15th Century the design of the Chandelier was based around a main ring, with other decorative pieces attached, but really only found in places of wealth and power.

Foyer Chandeliers really started to come into their own with big steps forward in glass making in the 18th Century.  The re-fracturing properties of glass to light become what we now know as the crystal chandelier.

As we approached the 19th Century, gas had become the favorite source of lighting and the gasolier appeared.  This was a combination of gas lighting and the chandelier.  In the 1890′s with the onset of electricity, foyer chandeliers were manufactured to use both gas and electricity. In the early 20th Century with the development of the electric light bulb, and house lighting the chandelier as we knew it for 100′s of years was gradually going out of fashion.

In recent years, Foyer Chandeliers have been making a big come back.  We now have bigger, grander homes and the chandelier has returned to be the focal and talking point in a home.

When installing your chandelier make sure it is at least 7 ft (approx. 2100 mm) from the floor to the very bottom of your fixture, just a rule of thumb so nobody bumps their heads.  As for the size of foyer chandeliers, the experts say you should add the length and width of the room together and call them inches for the chandelier diameter, so if your room is 10 ft x 10 ft, add 10 and 10 together, and your chandeliers ideal size is 20 inches diameter.

You can do it very cheaply by buying a solar blanket.  The better ones are set up on a roller at the end of your pool and can be rolled out or in in minutes.  The idea of the blankets is to soak up the Ultra Violet Rays from the sun, and this is store will warm up the water.  The blankets are a good idea but not very practical, if there is very little sun, or you want to swim in the pool, you cannot use the blanket.

The better way is to install a proper Solar Heating System, whether you DIY or have a contractor to do the installation work.  There are two types of Solar Panels for the roof, you have the roll out type, made of black rubber/vinyl, these usually come in strips approx. 1ft (300mm) wide with molded in tubes which carry the water.  The strips are laid onto your tiled or steel roof, and either fixed with fasteners or silicon.  These strips connect to flow and return piping (1 1/2” – 2”, 40 – 50mm)  either side of your roof.  This is the easy and most cheapest way for people who would prefer to DIY, although sometimes the fixings or silicon comes adrift and your Solar Strips lay everywhere.

The second way is to install Solar Heating Panels, these come as a package unit, where all the Ultra Violet Rays are captured under a glass panel that is all set up to heat the water.  The good thing about this system, although a bit more technical for the DIY person is that you can have as many panels as you like, as they just generally fit and bolt together on the roof.  The flow and return piping is then connected to the pumping system.  This system looks very neat and part of the roof, although more expensive to purchase and install.

The wind chime is becoming more and more popular these days, not only in Asian countries but also in Western countries including here in the US. The main reason for this is the growing popularity of Feng Shui. We all know that the wind chime produces melodious music which is relaxing for our mind. Next decide what you are going to grow, and how big will it grow.  This will depend on Planter Pot size  for the root ball, and strength of the container to carry the soil and water, and please make sure any pot or box you use has gone the proper drainage holes.

If you are growing plants that tend to be deep rooted, make sure you allow for this in the depth of the pot.  The plant may look a bit out of place in that big pot now, but you can ruin your pride and joy if you try to replant later.

If your preference is for wooden containers, make sure its a type of wood that wont rot and absorb water.  Many people use their wooden containers for plants or vegetables that are seasonal and die off.  This works well, because once they are done, you can empty the wooden container and give it a spell to dry out and have it ready for next year.

 A Personal Tip From Me Regarding Outdoor Solar Lighting.

On one occasion about two years ago, we purchased a set of 10 Solar Lights.  Very happy with our new Garden Lights, we spent a couple of hours setting them up at perfect spacings around our circular drive.

The next morning we come out, and our complete outdoor solar lighting system was gone, all the thieves had to do was just walk up, pull the lights out and do a runner.  We actually had those lights for less than 24 hours.

Off we went and bought 10 more lights, but said “this aint going to happen again”

We purchased 40 feet (12 metres) of 1/4” (approx. 5mm) Stainless Steel wire, this could have also been plastic coated steel wire.

Just above the spikes on the Solar Lights, I drilled a 3/8” hole (8mm) through the actual pole of the lights.

A very thin trench was then scrapped out around the garden to the depth that the Solar Lights were going to sit, we then threaded the 10 lights onto the wire, and pushed the lights into the ground in the position we wanted them.

When I bought the Stainless Steel wire, I also purchased 8 metal tent pegs, these were hammered into the ground at intervals with the hook over the wire.

The trench was then filled in, nobody knew the wire was there, and the lights were locked into place.

Someone has tried to remove one of the end lights, but we found it laying on the ground still hooked to the wire, and to this day we still have our 10 Solar Lights, and the thieves have nothing.

The Pros and Cons of Solar Lights.

Most of the modern Solar Lights do use LED’s instead of bulbs, some manufacturers will guarantee them for 10 years.  They cost nothing to install or run and the suns power is limitless, but Solar Lights do have their limitations. In my opinion they are not really designed for illuminating big areas, where lots of people may congregate.

Wooden Benches

Lets start with the Outdoor Wooden Benches, they have come quite a long way in style, looks and practicability in the last few years. A good well place bench in your backyard or on the patio, can really spruce the surroundings up, as long as it blends in with your existing gardens.  Planning the type of bench you would like does need a bit of forward thinking.  Are your benches going to be completely outside exposed to the weather, or still outside but under a patio or pergola?

Retractable Hose Reel

 The humble garden hose reel as we now know it has come along in huge leaps and bounds in recent years.  Remember when we used to bend a piece of metal up in a U shape, fix it to the wall, and there was our hose reel.  Times have changed and we all seem to be a bit more house proud these days, and we all want something that will blend in with the look and feel of your yard.
